Differences between E-Commerce and E-Business

Posted by
Harry asked:

E business, Ibis, E Commerce, Edom and there are more of these terms that are broadly used as acronyms or interchangeable terms. However in the Internet Language eBusiness or E biz and eCommerce or E com are two differentiated terms.

E commerce refers to online transactions – buying and selling of goods and services over the Internet involving transaction of monetary nature.

Electronic commerce or eCommerce are on-line business activities for products and services, be it business to business or business to consumer through the Internet. This is categorized in two broad heads:

ü Online Selling – An online selling activity includes and provides the consumer with the information they might need to make a buying decision in favor of the product or service offered in the website.

ü Online Purchasing – An eCommerce site with the help of technology infrastructure buys product over the Internet. It also included providing or being provided with online quote requisition, order placement and payment procedures.

E Business refers to online transactions including interactions with business partners, customers and vendors. eBusiness interactions are aimed at improving business processes and efficiency. In the present time most organization realize the importance of Internet and transforming the businesses into an eBusiness one to maintain the competitive edge.

In literal meaning words Commerce and Business don’t differ much in English dictionary. These two words are written and meant to describe organizations carrying out businesses. The difference between eCommerce and eBusiness is artificial and necessarily covers electronically transactions or information’s. While an eCommerce is the conclusion to a sale or purchase activity through internet with the help of internet banking or credit card gateway, eBusiness is a continuous process right from initiation of sale offer to after sales customer caring.

It even does not end there and initiate another phase of the sale. Customer educating, Internet Marketing, researching etc all come under eBusiness. While an eCommerce activity can be done by just with a website that accepts Credit / Debit cards and similar on line purchase instruments, eBusiness scope is lot more than just buying and selling over the Internet, it goes into much depth of procedures and cultures of an organization. It gives the site owner the power to connect directly to the customers, vendors, employees, partners, using the web. EBusiness activities are result of much more organized effort and a wholesome system through internet.

To conclude, it can be summarized that an eBusiness uses the Internet for all of its business activities, while eCommerce is only one domain of an eBusiness.

Electronic Commerce

Posted by
Peter Carlson asked:

The meaning of the term “electronic commerce” has changed over time. Originally, “electronic commerce” meant the facilitation of commercial transactions electronically, usually using technology like Electronic Data Interchange (EDI, introduced in the late 1970s) to send commercial documents like purchase orders or invoices electronically.

Later it came to include activities more precisely termed “Web commerce” — the purchase of goods and services over the World Wide Web via secure servers (note HTTPS, a special server protocol which encrypts confidential ordering data for customer protection) with e-shopping carts and with electronic pay services, like credit card payment authorizations.

When the Web first became well-known among the general public in 1994, many journalists and pundits forecast that e-commerce would soon become a major economic sector. However, it took about four years for security protocols (like HTTPS) to become sufficiently developed and widely deployed (during the browser wars of this period). Subsequently, between 1998 and 2000, a substantial number of businesses in the United States and Western Europe developed rudimentary Web sites.

Although a large number of “pure e-commerce” companies disappeared during the dot-com collapse in 2000 and 2001, many “brick-and-mortar” retailers recognized that such companies had identified valuable niche markets and began to add e-commerce capabilities to their Web sites. For example, after the collapse of online grocer Webvan, two traditional supermarket chains, Albertsons and Safeway, both started e-commerce subsidiaries through which consumers could order groceries online.

As of 2005, e-commerce has become well-established in major cities across much of North America, Western Europe, and certain East Asian countries like South Korea. However, e-commerce is still emerging slowly in some industrialized countries, and is practically nonexistent in many Third World countries.

Electronic commerce has unlimited potential for both developed and developing nations, offering lucrative profits in a highly unregulated environment.

There are several definitions of e-commerce, but they are covered by the same philosophy. E-commerce is considered as “exchanging any kind of business administrative transaction or information using information technology and communications” or to put it in more simple words “doing business electronically”.

The terms e-commerce and e-business are not similar. Whereas the first involves the sale, the second is the more generic notionof doing business through electronic means without necessarily selling. e-commerce not only includes tangible goods, it also includes trade in intangibles goods.

We understand the aim of establishing web-based business that makes use of a browser communications through Internet providers to identify and select products and services by conducting a commitment to purchase and complete a transaction, to obtain finally the e-commerce service.
